MARKET - Germany is a leading global biotech player and home to more biotech companies than any other country in Europe. The biotech industry in Germany consists of four important segments: medical biotech, industrial biotech, agricultural biotech, and services and suppliers.
INDUSTRIAL INFRASTRUCTURE - The German core biotech industry is represented by more than 500 companies, mainly characterized by small and midsized companies with less than 50 employees. The largest biotech clusters are located around Munich and Berlin/Brandenburg, Cologne/Düsseldorf and Rhine-Neckar Triangle (Heidelberg). Another emerging biotech sector is Leipzig/Dresden.
PERSONNEL - Germany has proportionally more natural science PhDs than the US or Japan. Its highly skilled workforce and each year around 10,000 graduates in biology as well as 50,000 graduates in mathematics and natural science are ready and waiting to work for you.
R&D – The German biotech industry is exemplified by a highly innovative environment that ranks only behind the USA in terms of technology and research resources. Germany’s research landscape is made up of 343 universities and over 330 research institutes who cooperate with companies to discover and bring new products to market. The German Research Foundation, the Helmholtz Association, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Leibniz Association, and the Max Planck Society - Germany can call upon an illustrious roll call of companies working at the cutting edge of biopharmaceutical research, and all of them are based in Germany.
INCENTIVES - From 2006 to 2009, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research plans to spend EUR 1.2 billion on life science research, of which 430 million Euro will be directly spent on biotech research.
VENTURE CAPITAL - Since 1999, 2.8 billion Euro in venture capital has been invested in Germany’s biotech industry. Ernst & Young reports that, with 319 million Euro, Germany ranked first in Europe in terms of venture capital investments in 2007.
