Germany is Europe's beating heart in the biopharmaceuticals sector and the world’s second leading power behind the USA. A quick glance at Germany’s impressive results confirms an obvious fact: medical biotech is booming.
The German biotech industry is a major driving force in Europe; both in terms of corporate representation and capacity to generate new – and profitable – intellectual property. This drive comes from the presence of mature and young, talented and ambitious companies alike. Industry, government, and the research sector are working together to push the industry even further ahead. Seeing so much promise, venture capital has also hitched its wagon to German biotech. Take a more detailed look at Germany’s medical biotech statistics and it becomes evident that “Made in Germany” is very probably the right thing for your biotech product too.
MARKET - Germany is the largest single market for biopharmaceuticals within the EU and ranks second worldwide behind the US. In 2007 alone, 10 new biopharmaceuticals were registered. In 2008 the number was 1, followed by 5 new registrations in the first four months of 2009.
INDUSTRIAL INFRASTRUCTURE – Of the 500 or so companies working in the dedicated biotech sector, 375 are active in the field of biomedicines. The industry is mainly characterized by small companies with few employees − most companies have less than 50 employees. Around 44 percent of biotech companies based in Germany develop new medicines or diagnostic tests in the fields of human and animal medicine. As such, medical biotechnology remains the most important industry segment.
PERSONNEL - Germany has proportionally more natural sciences PhDs than the US or Japan. Its highly skilled workforce and each year around 10,000 graduates in biology and 50,000 graduates in mathematics and natural sciences are ready and waiting to work for you.
R&D - The German biotech industry is exemplified by a highly innovative environment which places considerable value on technology and research resources. Germany’s research landscape is made up of 343 universities and over 330 research institutes. The German Research Foundation, the Helmholtz Association, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Leibniz Association, and the Max Planck Society- Germany can call upon an illustrious roll call of organizations working at the cutting edge of biopharmaceutical research, and all of them are based in Germany.
INCENTIVES - Growth in Germany’s medical biotech sector is gaining momentum with the help of an unprecedented government drive to promote new technologies. This campaign – known as the “High-Tech Strategy” – is combining the resources of all government ministries to help Germany achieve “global leadership in tomorrow‘s most important markets.” Committing 15 billion Euro to the development of cutting-edge technologies through 2009, with biotechnology accounting for 430 million Euro and health research for 800 million Euro, this campaign represents the most comprehensive program of its kind in modern Germany.
VENTURE CAPITAL - Venture capital is a significant source of financing for biotech companies in Germany. Around one third of the biotech-dedicated companies are at least partly financed by VC investors. Ernst & Young reports that Germany ranks first with 319 million Euro venture capital investments compared with other European countries for 2007.
